Lawyers to wear purple ribbons in honour of slain Makadara Principal Magistrate

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called upon all lawyers who are members of LSK to wear purple ribbons in honour of the slain Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti.

Through a notice published on Monday, June 17, 2024, on the society’s official page, LSK stated that all its members are expected to adorn the purple ribbon starting on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in memory of the late Principal Magistrate.

Following the shooting incident at Makadara Law Courts, LSK through its president Faith Odhiambo stated that they will continue to advocate for heightened security for officers of the court.

“The Law Society of Kenya calls upon all members across the 8 branches to join us in honouring the life of the late Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate-Makadara Law Courts starting on Tuesday, 18th June 2024, members are expected to adorn the purple ribbons during the week,” LSK statement reads.

“As part of this campaign, we continue to advocate for the security of Officers of the Court as they execute their duties.”

Honoring Magistrate Kivuti

LSK further directed all its members who are in Nairobi County to collect the purple ribbon from Milimani Law Courts or The Supreme Court.

Further giving instructions on the week's program, LSK stated that those outside the capital are expected to join various courts led by the respective branch chair to mourn Magistrate Kivuti.

“In Nairobi, these will be available for collection at Milimani Law Courts and the Supreme Court, "LSK directed.

"Those outside Nairobi are to join the various courts led by the respective branch chairs to mourn the Hon. Monica on Tuesday, let us come together and show our solidarity and support.”

Kivuti shooting

On Thursday, June 13, 2024, Magistrate Kivuti was shot at Makadara Law Courts by a police officer after she cancelled the bond of the officer’s wife who was an accused person on the grounds that she failed to offer a satisfactory explanation on why she failed to attend some court sessions.

However, On June 15, 2024, the Magistrate succumbed to injuries sustained during the shooting that occurred in the courtroom while undergoing treatment.
