Lawyer to serve 6 years for Sh23.6M shares theft

A lawyer who was charged with stealing shares worth Sh23.6 million has been sentenced to serve six years in jail.

Robert Langat (right) who appeared before the Milimani Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi was charged with four counts of stealing.

He was charged that on diverse dates between March 8, 2017 and April 7, 2017, jointly with others not in court, they stole 1,026,700 shares valued at Sh23,697,131, property of Kingdom Securities Limited.

With intent to defraud Kingdom Securities Limited 1,026,700 shares, the court was told that Langat forged a certificate of confirmation of grant purporting it to be genuine grant certificate issued and signed by Justice Aggrey Muchelule.

The offence took place at unknown time and place but within the country.

He was further charged with forging a judicial document contrary to section 351 of the penal code.

Jointly with others who were not before the court, Langat was charged with forging certificate of confirmation of grant purporting it to be genuine grant certificate issued and signed by Justice Muchelule.

 In mitigation, he pleaded with the court for leniency saying that he is a family man and the sole breadwinner.

“Your honor I am a family man and the sole breadwinner to my family and for that reason I am asking for leniency,” he pleaded.

In delivering the ruling, the Magistrate stated that the offences the accused was convicted with are very serious and could not be tolerated.

“The offences are very serious and need a custodial sentence,” said the magistrate.
