A woman and her three children died after a landslide hit Elgeyo Marakwet
county following heavy rains in the North Rift region.

The Friday morning incident occurred at Tuturung village in Marakwet East
constituency.

Area OCPD Vincent Kitilit said the four were sleeping in their house when
the landslide struck at 2am killing them instantly.

He said the bodies were recovered from debris of the permanent house, which had been buried in mud.

The officer said police arrived at the scene and together with residents, who had responded to distress calls,  retrieved the bodies and moved them to Kapsowar Mission Hospital mortuary.

“We have managed to recover the four bodies that had been buried in
the mud after their house was flattened by the downpour that
engulfed the region the whole night,” said Kitilit.

He said the village is among areas situated along the  Kerio escarpment and is prone to landslides during heavy rains.

Other areas that are at risk include Kaptarkon, Kapsokom, Kocholwo and Simit in Keiyo North and Keiyo South constituencies.

Ten people, among them three children, were killed after their houses were swept away by floods in the same areas eight years ago.
