Laikipia University announces phased re-opening following student unrest
Laikipia University has announced a phased reopening and resumption of academic activities following its recent closure due to student unrest.
The notice stated that the university’s 197th Senate meeting approved a controlled and phased return of students to ensure safety, continuity of learning, and institutional stability.

“Following the closure of the University on 23 March 2026 due to student unrest, the 197th University Senate held on 25 March 2026 approved a phased and controlled resumption of academic activities to ensure safety, continuity of learning, and institutional stability,” the notice read.
According to the schedule, fourth-year, second-year, Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students are expected to report on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
In the other phase, the First-year and third-year students will resume later, on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
Guidelines for reporting
The university has set strict rules that must be followed during the reopening period. All students must have valid student ID cards to get into the school.
They also need to finish their semester registration and pay any outstanding fees before they can report.

The administration has asked students to fully cooperate with university officials to make sure that academic programs can start up again smoothly and successfully.
“Therefore, all students are required to cooperate fully with university authorities to ensure a smooth and successful resumption of academic activities,” the notice read.
University Closure
The university directed all students to leave the premises immediately, noting that the evacuation would be monitored by university security personnel and government agencies.

The notice stated that the University security personnel, working in coordination with government security agencies, are currently on-site to supervise the evacuation process and ensure full compliance with the directive.
The University further said any student who fails to comply with this directive will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with University regulations.
