Kuria sues IEBC over deputy in Kiambu governor contest

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria yesterday sued the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for blocking him from picking a civil servant as his running mate in the race for Kiambu governor.
The Chama Cha Kazi party leader, in an urgent case filed before the High Court yesterday, says he is also aggrieved by the commission’s decision to limit the selection of running-mates within the sponsoring political or coalition party of the main candidate.
Kuria argues that the requirements violate the aspirants’ freedom to nominate a running mate of choice.
“Applicants nominating a running mate/deputy governor under Article 180(6) have been violated and will continue to be violated unless this court intervenes,” the court papers.
He claims the demand of a running mate to have resigned six months prior to the election date is discriminatory and offends the petitioner and other aspirants’ right of Freedom of Association as provided for in Articles 36(1) and 180 (6) of the Constitution.
In documents filed in court through lawyer Geoffrey Omenke, Kuria says the commission’s letter dated April 22 informed him that a running mate must not be a civil servant.
