Kenyatta University Teaching Research and Referral Hospital (KUTRRH) has received state-of-the-art cancer treatment equipment that is expected to cut down the cost of managing the disease and bring relief to families.

The Cyberknife is a precision diagnosis and treatment facility that identifies and treats tumours without opening up the patient as is the case with normal surgeries and rekindles hope of effectively fighting the deadly disease.

Receiving the equipment procured through Jos Hansen Group, the management Board Chair Prof Olive Mugenda said Kenyans will access cancer treatment services at a minimal cost of Sh350,000 that will be covered by National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) card holders.

“We are excited about this achievement which brings hope and relief to thousands of Kenyan families who cannot afford these services in private medical facilities or outside the country where it costs between 1.5 and 2 million shillings,” said Prof Mugenda who was accompanied by the CEO Ahmed Dagane and other board members. The Sh 675million equipment was acquired by the government from the US and Kenya becomes only the second African country to have it, after Egypt.
