Ksh44.7B pumped into projects aimed at transforming Kenya’s sports infrastructure
By Mercy Mwai, April 12, 2025Kenya’s ambitious Sh44.7 billion sports infrastructure upgrade is gathering pace, with Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya confirming that major projects, including the Talanta Sports Complex and renovations of key stadiums, are on course for completion ahead of the prestigious Afcon and Chan tournaments.
Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture, Tuya assured MPs that the government is committed to meeting CAF deadlines, with billions already disbursed to fast-track the works.
“The new stadium is 37 per cent complete and is expected to be completed by February 28, 2026,” she noted.
Speaking when she appeared before the Committee to appraise Members on the status of projects undertaken by the State Department in preparation for the Afcon and Chan championships, she disclosed that Sh3.6 billion will be used to fund the first phase of rehabilitation of Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, the venue for the Chan football bonanza to be held in August this year.
She said: “Phase two of upgrading Kasarani will cost another Sh3.1 billion to make the facility eligible to host Afcon.”
Further, she disclosed that Sh1.1 billion will be used for the ongoing renovations of Nyayo Stadium.
“Already, Sh200 million has been paid for the works done on the stadium, another venue for Chan,” she added.
The Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, which is also earmarked to host Chan, has so far consumed Sh300 million out of the Sh3.5 billion that the project is expected to cost.
With regard to renovations of the Police Sacco Stadium and Ulinzi Sports Complex, which will be used as training grounds for teams that will feature in the Chan championship, she disclosed that they will cost Sh582 million and Sh490 million respectively.
“Significant progress has been made on all the stadiums and we are confident of beating the deadline set by CAF,” she noted.
Similarly, Tuya mentioned that hosting the prestigious championship would come with many benefits, alongside putting Kenya on the international map in the sporting arena.
“The hosting of the Afcon championship is not only a national pride but also has many economic benefits,” said the CS.
On vandalism of the stadium by fans, the CS pleaded with football supporters to be responsible during matches, noting that the destruction of the facilities was costly to the taxpayer.
“The host country has the privilege of taking part in the championship and therefore offers motivation to our football players and entertains fans who will turn up to watch football greats in Africa.”
The Committee Chairperson and Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama assured the ministry that the Committee will push for the availability of funds to facilitate the smooth completion of the facilities ahead of the championships.
He quipped, “We appreciate the value the championships will bring to Kenya, and the Committee will do its best to ensure a stable flow of funds for the projects.”
Suba South MP Caroli Omondi noted that medical facilities should be considered in the construction work, noting that they are critical.
The Committee also met with the Athletics Kenya leadership to shed light on the steps they are taking to develop the sport and address the welfare of athletes.
