Ksh344M paid to wildlife attack victims

By , January 29, 2025

The government has paid out a total of Sh344 million to 1,122 claimants across the country as it resolves compensation cases arising from human-wildlife conflict.

Of the 1,122 claimants, 61 were from Nyeri county.

Some Sh1.8 billion has been paid so far to victims of human-wildlife conflicts, said Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano in Nyeri county.

For years, she said, “the biggest challenge facing human-wildlife co-existence is the perception of the communities around wildlife conservation and protected areas that the government mainly focuses on” protecting wildlife and does not care about the people who suffer when wild animals cause injuries and deaths of humans and livestock, property damage and destruction of crops.

Compensation bills

The government, she added, is planning to fence off wildlife sanctuaries in efforts to reduce human-wildlife conflict and cut its compensation bills.

She said her ministry is committed to clearing the compensation backlog, in a programme that started with the 2013 Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013.

Miano was speaking when she launched phase six of the 60km Mt Kenya electric fence that will run from Naromoru to Nanyuki.

County Wildlife Compensation Committees, she said, will help identify victims of human-wildlife conflict and prepare information to be used in compensation cases.
