Gor Mahia’s resurgence in the BetKing Premier League continued with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wazito yesterday at the Utalii Grounds in Nairobi.
The victory marks Gor’s fourth straight win in the league moving them to fourth on the log with 31 points.
Substitute Jules Ulimwengu had barely settled in when another substitute Samuel Onyango drifted past his marker on the right flank to tee him off for the lone goal in the 82nd minute.
Gor Mahia Coach Carlos Vaz Pinto was pleased with his charges’ discipline even as he called for patience.
“Now we focus on the FKF Betway Cup tournament on Wednesday,” said the Portuguese.
Gor’s performance certainly did themselves a world of good in a season that could be headed for a photo finish.
Up to four teams — Tusker, AFC Leopards, Kenya Commercial bank (KCB) and Kariobangi Sharks.
It is a race against time for the quartet as Football Kenya Federation is required to submit the names of the country’s emissaries in the lucrative championship by the end of June 30 deadline set by CAF.
But you cannot rule out holders Gor Mahia and Bandari out of the race as they are both waiting in the wings should the frontrunners falter.
Undoubtedly, the team of the weekend was Tusker who reclaimed the lead after walloping Vihiga United 4-0 at Mumias Complex on Sunday.
Following the win, Tusker built their points collection to 38 from eighteen matches with KCB and Leopards, both of who had a nightmarish weekend, in joint second position at 36 points apiece.
As Tusker were throwing down the gauntlet in style, Leopards, flattered to deceive when their egos were bruised in a 3-0 beating by Bidco United in Ruaraka.
Had Leopards beaten Bidco and Tusker slumped against Vihiga, they would have assumed the lead for the first time .
In the meantime, City Stars beat Sharks 2-1 to move from tenth to ninth position with 23 points from 18 matches.
Sofapaka and Ulinzi Stars also did well to register identical 1-0 victories over KCB and Nzoia Sugar respectively.
