Gor Mahia are the 2021 champions of the FKF Betway Cup following a dramatic shoot-out over perennial rivals AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium  yesterday.

The 4-1 win capped a good afternoon for coach Manuel Vaz Pinto in his first season in charge of K’Ogalo with Kenneth Muguna being named man of the match.

Gor Mahia will now represent Kenya in the CAF Confederation Cup besides bank Sh2 million for their exploits.

Gor goalkeeper Gad Mathews displayed a man-of-the-match performance saving Said Tsuma’s and Isaac Kipyegon’s spot kicks, while K’Ogalo scored through Sydney Wahongo, Kenneth Muguna, Samuel Onyango and Clifton Miheso. The only goal from AFC Leopards was scored by Washington Munene.

Coach Pinto was an elated man after the match. “I am very happy because we prepared well even for our penalties.

What is important is that the team can enjoy this because honestly we deserved it. We played a good opponent and now it is time to think about the league.”

The opening half was open for all teams as the game started in feverish fashion.

However it was AFC Leopards who had clear cut chances with danger man Elvis Rupia hitting the post in the 10th minute in what was the best chance of the opening stanza.

Just after 15 minutes of the match, K’Ogalo started dictating play with the slick footed John Macharia and Clifton Miheso using their pace well but the Ingwe full-backs Lewis Badi and Captain Isaac Kipyegon were up to the task.

Apart from a few attempts through corners on both ends that were unfruitful, it was a quiet affair with stern centre referee Peter Waweru awarding two yellow cards to Tsuma of AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia’s Frank Odhiambo who was playing in a unique role of full-back.

Meanwhile in the third place play-off, Bidco United beat Division One side Equity FC 1-0 courtesy of a Kassim Mwinyi effort in the 32nd minute to go home with Sh750,000.
