Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) yesterday pressed for better pay for primary school headteachers owing to added responsibilities.

Union secretary general Collins Oyuu (above) told headteachers yesterday the decision to domicile the Junior Secondary School learners in primary would result in a heavier workload for headteachers hence the need for improved terms of service.

“There is a clause in the previous CBA that is not addressed and therefore as a union, we shall be seeking a salary increment in line with terms and conditions of service,” said Oyuu.

Oyuu who addressed the 18th (Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (Kepsha) Annual Conference at the Sheikh Zayed Children Welfare Centre in Mombasa demanded the salary review for headteachers be implemented in January.

“Now that you have domiciled the junior secondary school in primary schools, we want to know what is the plight of teachers in terms of their welfare as they take up these responsibilities. Head-teachers are now going to be overburdened and this calls for a review of terms,” said Oyuu.

The union also demanded the Teachers Service Commission effects promotions of teachers who have stagnated in one job group for long as well as promoting those that are serving in acting capacity.

They urged the government to promote headteachers in Grade D1, saying the progression of the tutors at that level has stagnated for long.
