KNCHR warns of fraudsters targeting victims and survivors of human rights violations

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has warned members of the public against fraudsters targeting victims and survivors of human rights violations by soliciting money from them through pretense.

In a Press Statement on Thursday, May 14, 2026, KNCHR, while issuing an advisory, warned that the that fraudulent individuals are soliciting money from members of the public under the false pretence of facilitating compensation or reparations on behalf of the Commission.

“The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) wishes to alert the public that fraudulent individuals are soliciting money from members of the public under the false pretense of facilitating compensation or reparations on behalf of the Commission,” KNCHR said.

For your records, the commission maintains that it does not charge any fees and that all the services at KNCHR are free.

At the same time, the Commission has emphasised that it does not collect money from victims for registration, processing of cases, or accessing compensation, reparations or any other service offered.

In addition, KNCHR has noted that it does not use private M-Pesa numbers or private paybill numbers for any of its processes.

Advisory to the public

The Commission, while warning against individuals asking for money in exchange for compensation or reparation, has announced that it is taking appropriate action through the relevant legal authorities.

“Anyone asking for money in exchange for compensation or reparations is a fraudster and is not affiliated with KNCHR in any way. The Commission is taking appropriate action through the relevant legal authorities,” the Commission added.

In addition, the Commission has called on Members of the public who have been approached, or who may have sent money to such individuals, to: Report immediately to the nearest police station and keep a record of all transactions.

“Contact KNCHR directly through its official channels to verify any information.The KNCHR remains committed to ensuring that the reparations process is transparent, dignified, and accessible to all. The Commission communicates with the public only through its official platforms listed below,” KNCHR said.
