Kitui’s Ithookwe Stadium 96% complete ahead of Mashujaa Day fete – Mueke

By , October 7, 2025

Ithookwe Stadium, a 10,000-seat facility set to host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, is now 96 per cent complete.

The news was shared by Principal Secretary for the State Department of Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, via his Twitter account on 7 October 2025.

Mueke joined Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, along with Principal Secretaries Raymond Omollo and Elijah Mwangi, for an inspection of the stadium.

“Joined my colleagues CS Hon. H.E. Salim Mvurya (Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports), PS Raymond Omollo (Internal Security) and PS Elijah Mwangi (Sports) for an inspection visit of Ithookwe Stadium and its associated infrastructure ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations,” he posted.

“The stadium is now 96% complete, and the progress is impressive — Kitui is ready to host the nation! We were hosted by Kitui Governor Julius Malombe.”

Inspection highlights stadium progress

The inspection focused on the stadium’s main structures, including the pitch, seating areas, and auxiliary facilities. The team also reviewed associated infrastructure such as access roads and parking areas.

Minor works, including the installation of a canopy and adjustments to the drainage system, are expected to be completed in the coming week. The remaining works will be finalised after Mashujaa Day to ensure the stadium meets international standards.

CS Mvurya highlighted the broader benefits of the stadium beyond the national celebrations. He encouraged local football teams, including FC Dynamo, to use the facility to develop skills and prepare for both local and national competitions. He also said the stadium will serve as a hub for sports development and talent identification in Kitui County.

In addition to the stadium, the government has coordinated with the Kenya Urban and Rural Roads Authority (KURRA) to improve access to the venue. An 885-metre perimeter wall will also be constructed to prevent encroachment and protect the facility.

The stadium was originally scheduled for handover on October 6, 2025. However, with minor works still remaining, the handover will now take place on October 14, 2025, ahead of the celebrations on October 20. The leaders assured residents that these final touches will not affect the event and that the stadium will be fully operational in time for the Mashujaa fete.
