Kisumu residents are set to benefit from over Sh30 million financial package meant to improve their lives by providing them with requisite resources and skills.

Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga said the countywide plan to be funded through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) kitty, targets to empower residents of the county to break the cycle of poverty.

Of the money, Sh11, 111,804, has been given out to various farmers to finance value addition in agri-business projects to boost food and nutrition security in the lakeside county. Ruth noted that most women in the county face multi-layered barriers to accessing the labour market and bear the brunt of the hardships resulting from poverty, which her office is working to solve.

“We have distributed tree, fruit, and vegetable seedlings to over 1,000 groups across the county, while also facilitating market access and promoting value addition to break the cycle of hunger and poverty,’ she said during the distribution of cheques to various groups at Rabuor Primary School in Nyando Constituency. During the function, Ruth distributed several water tanks to groups and schools to help in storing water during dry seasons.

Also distributed were bursary cheques worth Sh.8.8 million to sponsor bright and needy students, Sh8.8 million for women economic empowerment projects and Sh5, 595,200 for poultry farmers. Other assorted equipment issued included 15 off-grid solar panels and  solar fridges for fish farmers to avoid fish going to waste after harvests, fish hatcheries, tree and fruit seedlings.
