Kisumu fish farmers receive fingerlings to boost production
Fish farming in Kisumu has received a major boost following the distribution of fingerlings worth Sh2 million to cage fish farmers.
The more than 90 farmers largely drawn from Ogal beach in Kisumu West sub-county, most of whom were plagued by mass death of fish in cages last year, also benefited from Sh1 million worth of fish feeds to help them recover from the massive economic losses they incurred.
Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, while officiating the distribution exercise on Tuesday, said the donation is part of an economic stimulus plan that aims to enable the farmers restock the affected cages zones and recover the losses.
Nyong’o announced that the fingerling support – a joint venture between the National and county governments, will be used to out-scale the initiative to other beaches that were affected.
He said the county had undertaken an evaluation to establish the affected beaches.
He reiterated his commitment in supporting fish production initiatives, urging the fish farmers not to give up on the venture. “With dwindling landings from capture fisheries, the county government has prioritised interventions towards promotion of development of aquaculture,” he said.
