Kisii institute closed after student’s riot over principal

By , June 28, 2024

Keroka Technical Institute in Kisii county has been closed indefinitely following protests by students demanding the removal of the institution’s principal.

The institution’s principal ordered the closure after students took to the streets on Wednesday calling for his immediate removal.

The students accused the principal and his administration of laxity and mismanagement.

They further claimed that he had refused to address their grievances.

Lecturers on go-slow

The students also allege that they have not been learning for several months owing to a go-slow by lecturers whose salaries have been delayed for four months consecutively.

“I haven’t done any practical work despite paying school fees as demanded by the institution. My course demands that we do practical work but we are yet to do one,” lamented a mechanical engineering student at the institution.

They called on Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to intervene.
