Kisii, agency partner to build Sh1.9b cancer centre

The Kisii County Government has approved the construction of a Sh1.9 billion cancer centre in the wake of a rising tide of Non-Communicable Diseases in the region.
Governor Simba Arati said the centre will serve more than 10 million residents from the Lake Region Economic Bloc.
He made the revelations during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Kibos International Foundation, a international Non-Governmental Organisation at the Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital.
Arati called on the Foundation medical experts to invest in the setting up of a laboratory for heart diseases- Cardiovascular Laboratory in the area.
“We are also urging our partners to invest resources in equipping the laboratory in order to help in the treatment of the increasing number of patients with heart diseases, and generally cancer,” he said.
The MoU, according to the governor, will boost healthcare services.
Arati, accompanied by his deputy, Dr Robert Monda and KTRH chief executive Oimeke Mariita said completion of the centre and the Card lab will reduce the number of patients seeking treatment abroad; enhance medical tourism, foster the county’s revenue and health services.
Ambrose Kibos, the Foundation’s chief executive who led the team of experts from Singapore, Japan, India and Singapore said they will also partner with Kisii in research and training.
