Kindiki throws weight behind Ruto, Raila calls for dialogue
By Lutta Njomo, July 9, 2024
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has thrown weight behind President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s calls for dialogue to address the current issues bedevilling the country.
In a statement on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, CS Kindiki noted that the multi-sectoral dialogue route is key to addressing the issues threatening to destabilise the country.
Kindiki indicated that assenting to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Amendment Act of 2024 paves the way for a broader engagement with the disgruntled citizens.
The Interior Cabinet Secretary highlighted that the IEBC Bill will offer relief in searching for consensus.
How dialogue will help
The Interior CS emphasised the multi-sectoral dialogue strategy will help the country address the issue of jobs, the debt burden, public expenditure cuts, and the fight against corruption.
“Kenya has a way of navigating through difficult and trying moments.
“In the wake of the urgency for closing ranks to address pressing national challenges that pose an existential threat to our stability and nationhood, the assent of the IEBC Amendment Act of 2024 earlier today and the commitment by President Ruto and ODM Leader Raila Odinga to continuous dialogue, offers relief to a nation in search of consensus and a broad-based political route for addressing priority matters of creation of jobs and income opportunities for the youth, the debt burden, public expenditure cuts, and the fight against corruption,” Kindiki stated.
Ruto on dialogue
President William Ruto announced on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, a six-day multi-sectoral convention which will kick off on Monday, July 15, 2024.
President Ruto said the forum will deliberate on the way forward out of the crisis Kenya is facing. He said the forum will encompass 150 members, 50 of them youth, while 100 will be drawn from religious institutions, civil society, professional organisations and political parties, among other stakeholders.
“We have had consultations and agreed that, to bring the country together to focus on the issues of priority, we will move ahead with the multisectoral forum,” he said.
“As a way of charting the future from the current situation, I welcome all leaders and other stakeholders to work together to address the current economic situation through a broad-based political arrangement and to rally the country forward,” Ruto added.
His sentiments were echoed by Raila who maintained that dialogue will help unlock issues affecting the country and those raised by Gen Z.
