Kindiki off to Uganda to represent Ruto at key event

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has travelled to Entebbe, Uganda, to represent President William Ruto at the country’s Independence Day celebrations.

Kindiki announced his departure early Thursday, October 9, 2025, through a Facebook post.

“Departed for Entebbe, Uganda to represent Kenya on behalf of President William Ruto during the 63rd Uganda Independence Day Celebrations,” Kindiki wrote.

The celebrations, to be held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala, mark 63 years since Uganda gained independence from Britain in 1962. President Yoweri Museveni will preside over the national event, which will also attract senior government officials, military officers, and foreign dignitaries from across the region.

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, recently declared Kololo as the permanent venue for future Independence Day celebrations. This year’s event focuses on unity, resilience, and national development.

Strengthening regional diplomatic ties

Kindiki’s trip to Uganda comes just over a month after his visit to Algeria, where he led a Kenyan delegation to the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair in Algiers from September 4 to 10. The trade fair brought together businesses, governments, and investors from across the African continent to showcase opportunities and promote trade among member states.

His visit to Uganda reflects the same diplomatic intent, strengthening Kenya’s ties with its neighbours and reaffirming its support for regional peace and cooperation. Kenya and Uganda have long maintained close relations, particularly in trade, energy, and infrastructure.

The two countries are also key partners in the East African Community (EAC) and have collaborated on projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway and cross-border security efforts.

President Museveni’s government, meanwhile, is preparing for a general election in early 2026 after the 81-year-old leader was cleared to seek another term. His attendance at the celebrations is expected to draw regional attention, as Uganda positions itself for another political transition under his long rule.

Kindiki’s representation of President Ruto at the event shows Nairobi’s continued engagement in regional diplomacy and cooperation.
