Kimunya suspends Livestock Bill 2021 after request from executive

National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya withdrew the Livestock Bill 2021 after what he termed as a request from the executive.

In a statemembt he made on Friday, June 11 Kimunya stated that the withdrawal of the bill would give government and stakeholders a chance to dialogue on the matter.

“The bill has temporarily been suspended until we have more consultations within the government because the issues we are raising are some of the issues people have raised from elsewhere,” Kimunya said.

The Majority Leader added that the government was looking at ways to make the bill work.

“We just need to see what was the thinking in government in terms of bringing these issues and what amendment will be required to make the bill workable. The bill is good, it does not only cover bees but it covers other livestock,” Kimunya added.

The bill sought to have bee farmers and those manufucturing any animal products operate under the authority of a valid license.

Those who would disregard the new directives brought by the bill would end up partying with a Ksh500,000 fine or face a jail term not exceeding one year or both.

“A person who contravenes section 1 of the bill commits an offense is liable, on conviction to a fine not exceeding Sh500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding twelve months or both,” part of the withdrawn bill read.
