Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika has announced the formation of a special task force to investigate the alarming rise of child sex trafficking in the transit town of Maai Mahiu and propose solutions to the vice.

This follows a recent report that revealed girls as young as 13 are being trafficked for sex in the small town, with the help of women.

The task force, set to report back by 5th September 2025, is tasked with probing the extent of the child sex trade in the region and identifying the key perpetrators.

The task force will be chaired by Nakuru County’s Health CEC, Ms. Roselyne Mungai, who will lead the team in identifying the causes, key players, and proposing policy measures to end the illicit trade and prevent its recurrence. The investigation is not limited to Maai Mahiu alone; it will extend to other towns along the Northern Transport Corridor, including Salgaa, Kikopey, Total, and Longonot.

Kihika’s message

Governor Kihika emphasised the urgency of the issue, calling on all sectors of society to unite in combating the crime.

”The task force, chaired by the Health CEC, Ms. Roselyne Mungai, will inquire into the depth of the vice, its causes, the key players and perpetrators, and will propose policy measures not only to end this abhorrent crime but also to prevent its recurrence. The investigation will extend to other centres along the Northern Transport Corridor, including Salgaa, Kikopey, Total, Longonot, and others. This team will work closely with the National Government,” Governor Kihika said via her official X account on Friday, August 8, 2025.

The governor further encouraged the community to actively participate in eradicating this menace, urging those with information to come forward. A dedicated helpline has been set up for reporting such cases.

”I urge the community to speak out, as this is a problem that affects all of us — leaders, the church, teachers, and parents. We must not shut our eyes to the perpetration of this crime.”

In her message to children affected by the sex trade, Governor Kihika assured them that the county government would provide psychosocial support, ensuring their safe reintegration into society and education.

”To our children: We are here to help you. We will provide psychosocial support and help you return to school as we work to ensure you realise your dreams of a better future.”
