KETRACO appoints Kipkemoi Kibias as acting CEO

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has named Engineer Kipkemoi Kibias as its Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective 19 September 2025.

The appointment follows a decision by the Board of Directors in consultation with the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service and the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum.

The board, in a statement on Friday, thanked outgoing Managing Director and CEO Dr Eng. John Muoki Mativo for his “invaluable service and contribution” to the company and wished him well in his future endeavours.

“The Board of Directors in consultation with the Chief of Staff & Head of Public Service and the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy & Petroleum, wishes to inform the general public of the appointment of Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias as the Acting Managing Director/CEO of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (KETRACO) with effect from 19th September 2025,” read the statement.

“The Board of Directors would like to appreciate the outgoing Managing Director/CEO Dr Eng. John Muoki Mativo for his invaluable service and contribution to the Company. We wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Experienced engineer

According to KETRACO, Kibias brings over two decades of experience in Kenya’s power sector. His career spans design and construction, power system planning, operation and maintenance, and regional coordination roles.

“Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias is a seasoned engineer with over 20 years in the power sector. His expertise includes design and construction, power system planning, operation and maintenance,” KETRACO said.

Before his elevation, he served as General Manager for System Operation and Power Management at KETRACO. He previously held various positions at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), including regional manager in two regions and county manager in several counties.

“Prior to joining Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) as General Manager, System Operation & Power Management, he worked in various capacities, including Design & Construction, Power System Planning, Operation and Maintenance, Regional Manager in 2 regions, County Manager in various counties, Design & Construction, Power System Planning, Operation and Maintenance and Regional Coordination roles at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC),” read the press release.

Qualifications

Kibias holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He also earned a Master of Business Administration in Strategic Management from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa and a master’s degree in Nuclear Power Plant Engineering from KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School in Ulsan, South Korea. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Energy Studies at Moi University.

He is registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya as a professional engineer, is a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya, and serves on the Federation of African Engineering Organisation’s Nuclear Committee.

“He is registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) as a professional engineer, a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) and a member of the Federation of African Engineering Organisation (FAEO) Nuclear Committee.”

KETRACO’s board said it looks forward to Kibias steering the state corporation during the transition.
