The Republic of Kenya has welcomed the first phase of a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, describing it as a critical step toward reducing human suffering in Gaza.

The announcement, issued on October 9, 2025, by the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, was signed by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

“Kenya welcomes the first phase of the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, a vital step in easing human suffering in Gaza.”

The ceasefire includes the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the facilitation of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Kenya emphasised the importance of building on this breakthrough to achieve lasting peace, highlighting the two-state solution as outlined in United Nations resolutions.

The statement aligns with the position articulated by President William Ruto during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 24, 2024.

“It further welcomes the agreement for the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the entry of aid into Gaza. Kenya urges all parties to build on this important breakthrough towards a lasting peace, anchored on the two-state solution as outlined in UN resolutions.”

Condolences and humanitarian support

Kenya extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones in the conflict, expressing solidarity during their time of grief. The government acknowledged the human toll experienced on both sides, reflecting concern for the nearly two-year-long conflict that escalated following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Kenya reiterated the need for protection of civilians and humanitarian support for those affected by the hostilities.

The statement commended the role of international mediators in reaching the ceasefire, specifically noting the contributions of the United States of America, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.

These diplomatic efforts have been crucial in achieving the first phase of the agreement, which could pave the way for broader negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. Kenya highlighted the importance of continued international engagement to maintain momentum toward a sustainable resolution.

Kenya urged all parties to preserve the progress achieved and work toward a comprehensive peace process. The government reaffirmed its commitment to global peace, stability, and security in West Asia, emphasising the need for a sustainable solution that respects the rights and dignity of all affected populations.
