Kenya receives food donation jointly purchased by 8 countries

Kenya has received 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat donations jointly bought by eight countries to curb the rising hunger in the country.
The consignment, received by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the Port of Mombasa on Monday, March 20, also includes 16,000 metric tonnes of sorghum from the United States of America through USAID.
The DP said the grain was purchased from farmers in Ukraine.
“In a special way, President William Ruto and I as well as the people of Kenya, we thank Ukraine for their support, despite being in the middle of war.
“We applaud you. We deeply appreciate the countries who purchased the food- United Kingdom, Norway, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Czech Republic.
“I recognise the critical role played by the World Food Programme, which facilitated the delivery,” Gachagua said in a statement.
Journalists were locked out of the event in Mombasa.
Food donation from church
In January, Gachagua received a food donation of Ksh124M from The Church of Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The DP stated that the donation would benefit over 200,000 Kenyans who live in drought-stricken regions.
“We appreciate our friends and partners for their continued support towards Kenyans affected by the drought situation, especially in ASAL counties.
“Today, I received a food donation worth USD 1 Million from The Church of Christ of Latter-Day Saints who had paid me a courtesy call at Harambee House, Annex Nairobi. This donation will benefit 40,000 households, an equivalent of 200,000 people,” Gachagua tweeted.
