Kenya Met issues weather update as sunny and rainy periods expected across the country
By Emmanuel Rono, April 6, 2026Kenya Meteorological Department has revealed that the country will experience mixed weather conditions over the next 24 hours, with rainfall forecast in parts of the Rift Valley and North Eastern regions, while sunny skies are expected to prevail across most parts of the country.
In its daily weather update for April 6–7, 2026, the department said that isolated rains are likely to occur in parts of the Highlands, both west and east of the Rift Valley. Similar conditions are also expected in sections of North-Eastern, North-Western, and coastal regions.

“Daily Weather Update: 6th – 7th April 2026. Sunny intervals are expected over most parts of the country. However, rainfall is expected over a few places of the Highlands West & East of the Rift Valley, some parts of North-Eastern/Western and coastal regions,” Kenya Met noted.
Counties affected
According to the weather man, counties in the Rift Valley and those around the Lake Victoria Basin, including Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu, and Kakamega, are likely to experience showers and thunderstorms at night, followed by breaks of sunshine in the morning before afternoon rains return in isolated areas.
A similar pattern is expected in the highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and its neighbouring counties, where light rains may occur in the morning after overnight showers, before thunderstorms develop again later in the day.

In the North Eastern region, covering counties such as Garissa County, Wajir County, and Mandera County, residents should expect intermittent rainfall.
“Showers and thunderstorms over a few places are expected tonight, with sunny intervals and rain over a few places in the morning,” Muriuki said, adding that “showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places in the afternoon.”
Winds
The forecast also raised concern over strong winds in parts of northern Kenya, particularly Turkana and Marsabit counties.
“Strong southeasterly winds of above 25knots (12.5m/s) expected over Turkana and Marsabit counties,” Kenya Met said.
In the southeastern lowlands-Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta-the weather will remain mostly sunny, with only a slight chance of light rains in the morning and isolated showers later in the day.
