Kenya and Azerbaijan sign MoU on bilateral political consultations
Kenya and Azerbaijan have successfully signed a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on bilateral political consultations.
Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, termed the move as a significant step toward strengthening future engagements and fostering partnerships between the two nations.
The MoU was signed following a meeting between Mudavadi and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov that happened on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.
Mudavadi in a statement shared via his official social media accounts stated that their discussions had focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and exploring mutual opportunities ahead of the upcoming 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly known as COP29.
“Kenya and Azerbaijan have successfully signed the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Bilateral Political Consultations, a significant step toward strengthening future engagements and fostering partnerships between our two nations,” Mudavadi stated.
“On the margins of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), I held fruitful discussions with H.E. Mr. Bayramov_Jeyhun, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan. Our dialogue focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and exploring mutual opportunities, particularly as we prepare for the upcoming COP 29.”
Kenya’s commitment
Mudavadi further stated that he had commended Azerbaijan’s commitment to environmental sustainability and expressed Kenya’s eagerness to collaborate more closely on climate action.
Azerbaijan will host the 2024 COP 29.
Mudavadi went ahead to underscore Kenya’s commitment toward addressing global climate challenges.

He also stated that Kenya will work with Azerbaijan to ensure COP 29 achieves meaningful progress on key issues such as climate financing, addressing loss and damage, and energy transition.
“I commended Azerbaijan’s commitment to environmental sustainability and expressed Kenya’s eagerness to collaborate more closely on climate action, as Azerbaijan will host COP 29. Kenya remains firmly committed to addressing global climate challenges, as demonstrated by our leadership in hosting the African Climate Summit (ACS) in 2023 and our continued efforts to promote green energy and sustainable development,” Mudavadi said.
“We look forward to working with Azerbaijan to ensure COP 29 achieves meaningful progress, particularly on key issues such as climate financing, addressing loss and damage, and energy transition,” he added.

This year’s COP29, will be the 29th United Nations Climate Change conference, which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11, 2024 to November 22.
