KeNHA issues warning after floodwaters cut off Kaplong-Kisii Road
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a traffic advisory after flooding at the Kipsonoi River Bridge in Mugeni disrupted transport along the busy Kaplong–Kisii (B6) Road.
Taking to its official X account on Saturday, March 21, 2026, KeNHA said the bridge, located between Sotik and Chebilat, had been rendered unsafe for motorable traffic following a significant rise in water levels caused by heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that the Kipsonoi River Bridge at Mugeni, located between Sotik and Chebilat along the Kaplong Kisii (B6) Road, has experienced flooding, rendering the section unsafe for motorable traffic,” KeNHA stated.
Motorists warned
The authority warned motorists against attempting to cross the flooded section, urging strict adherence to instructions from police officers and traffic marshals deployed at the scene.
“The situation has been occasioned by heavy rainfall in the upstream catchment areas, resulting in a significant rise in water levels,” the statement reads in part.
“Motorists are strongly advised to exercise caution and avoid driving through flooded areas to ensure their safety.”
Alternative routes
To minimise disruption, KeNHA has provided alternative routes for affected travellers. Motorists heading toward Chebilat and Keroka have been advised to use the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Chebilat–Keroka route, while those travelling to Kisii can use the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Kisii route.
Officials noted that the recommended diversions are paved and can accommodate traffic as authorities work to address the situation at the flooded bridge.
The flooding at Kipsonoi River Bridge comes amid ongoing heavy rains affecting several parts of the country, leading to rising river levels and increasing the risk of road disruptions.
Transport along the Kaplong–Kisii highway is critical for movement between Kericho and Kisii counties, and the temporary closure is expected to inconvenience motorists and businesses relying on the route.
KeNHA said it is closely monitoring the situation and will take appropriate action should water levels continue to rise or recede.

Director General Luka Kimeli assured road users that the authority remains committed to ensuring safety and restoring normal traffic flow as soon as conditions allow.
The agency also called on the public to cooperate with authorities on the ground as efforts continue to manage the situation and prevent accidents.
“KeNHA is closely monitoring the situation and will take appropriate action should water levels continue to rise. The Authority appreciates your cooperation as we work to ensure the safety of all road users,” the authority said.
Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok Road
This comes just days after KeNHA issued a traffic advisory following flooding and silt deposition along the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok (B7) Road, warning motorists to exercise extreme caution.

In a statement dated March 19, 2026, KeNHA said the affected section is at Kedong Ranch near Suswa, where heavy rainfall has disrupted normal traffic flow.
“The Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok (B7) Road experienced flooding and silt deposition at Kedong Ranch near Suswa,” the authority said, adding that efforts were underway to reopen the road.
“The Authority is currently working to reopen the affected section of the road.”
