KeNHA announces closure of Mai Mahiu-Narok Road

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the closure of the Mai Mahiu-Narok Road.

In a statement, the authority stated that the road’s closure is occasioned by the sudden siltation coupled with heavy debris deposited on a section stretching over a kilometre in Suswa area.

The Kenya National Highways Authority would like to notify the public of the closure of Mai Mahiu – Narok Road. This follows sudden siltation, coupled with heavy debris deposited on a section stretching over a kilometre this evening at Suswa area, about 27 kilometres from Mai Mahiu town towards Narok,” a statement by KeNHA reads in parts.

While reiterating their commitment to seamless connectivity, KeNHA stated that the closure of the road will allow smooth clearance of the siltation to prevent incidents of vehicles getting stuck.

The authority subsequently advised motorists plying the route to use alternative routes such as the main Nairobi-Nakuru Highway as their contractor who is on site on site clears the siltation, an exercise that will extend overnight.

“The closure will allow smooth clearance of the siltation and avoid incidents of vehicles getting stuck among other possible dangers. The Authority advises motorists plying this route to use alternative routes including the main Nairobi – Nakuru Highway. The Authority remains committed to seamless connectivity,” KeNHA added.

The latest came shortly after the authority declared the road impassable due to the flash floods witnessed after heavy rains.

“Heavy rains in the catchment areas of Kinale and Kijabe have led water courses to experience an upsurge which has led to the washing away of debris and several houses,

“KeNHA informs the public that the following road sections are now impassable; approximately 700m from Mai Mahiu towards Naivasha and approximately 1km from Mai Mahiu towards Suswa/Narok,” KeNHA said.
