KeNHA announces temporary closure of road sections on Uhuru Highway
By Mustafa Juma, January 15, 2026Motorists using Uhuru Highway and Haile Selassie Avenue in Nairobi have been advised to prepare for temporary night-time road closures starting this weekend, as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) undertakes critical road works.
Taking to its official X account on Thursday, January 15, 2026, KeNHA reminded Kenyans of a public notice dated January 9, 2026, in which KeNHA announced that several sections around the Uhuru Highway/Haile Selassie Avenue Roundabout will be temporarily closed to traffic from Friday, January 16, 2026, to Sunday, January 18, 2026.
Phased intervals
According to the authority, the closures will be implemented in phased intervals during off-peak hours, specifically between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., to minimise disruption to traffic flow.
“Reminder: @KeNHAKenya wishes to notify the public that there will be a temporary closure of road sections on Uhuru Highway/Haile Selassie Roundabout. The closure is scheduled in phase intervals between 10 pm to 5 am from Friday January 16, 2026 to Sunday January 18, 2026,” KeNHA stated.

Affected road sections
The affected road sections include Upper Hill-bound lanes, Central Business District (CBD)-bound lanes, Mombasa-bound lanes, and Nakuru-bound lanes.
KeNHA, in its public notice, said the temporary closures are necessary to allow for the reinstatement of the tarmac (asphalt concrete layer) at the busy roundabout, which serves as a critical transport link between Nairobi’s CBD, Upper Hill, and major highways leading out of the city.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that there will be a temporary closure of road sections on Uhuru Highway/Haile Selassie Roundabout. The road sections to be affected are as follows: 1.) Upper Hill Bound Lanes, 2.) CBD Bound Lanes, 3.) Mombasa Bound Lanes, 4.) Nakuru Bound Lanes,” KeNHA stated.
“This closure is scheduled in phase intervals at off-peak hours (10.00 pm – 5.00 am) from Friday, January 16, 2026, to Sunday, January 18, 2026. This is to allow for the reinstatement of the tarmac (asphalt concrete layer). KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site.”
