Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a four-day traffic disruption on a section of the Thika Superhighway to facilitate essential maintenance works along this stretch of the highway.

In a public notice on Thursday, April 10, 2025, the authority said the temporary closure would affect a section of the busy Thika Superhighway (S1) at Kihunguro.

The affected section will be closed from Friday, April 11, 2025, to Monday, April 14, 2025, between 11:00 pm and 4:00 am.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) would like to inform the public of a temporary traffic disruption following the closure of a section of Thika Superhighway (S1) Road at Kihunguro, from Friday, April 11, 2025, to Monday, April 14, 2025, between 2300 hrs and 0400 hrs. This is to allow for highway maintenance works along the section,” KeNHA announced.

Motorists travelling from Nairobi to Thika, as well as those in the opposite direction, are advised to use the service lanes as indicated in the traffic management plan or as directed by traffic marshals on site.

KeNHA urges all road users to adhere to the traffic management measures, including following road signs, and to cooperate with the police and traffic marshals to ensure smooth flow of traffic and safety during the maintenance period.

“Motorists travelling from Nairobi to Thika and vice versa are advised to use the service lanes as indicated in the drawing or as directed by traffic marshals,” KeNHA stated.

“KeNHA advises motorists to follow the traffic management plan, project road signs and cooperate with police and traffic marshals on site.”

KeNHA encourages all travellers to plan their journeys accordingly and expects minimal disruption to the road network outside of the designated closure hours.

KeNHA is responsible for the management, development, rehabilitation, and maintenance of Class S, A and B roads in the country.

Other road agencies are the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).
