KDF intensifies security preparedness with training on AI, social media and information warfare

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has launched strengthened training to help officers navigate the modern information landscape, recognising it as a critical domain of national security amid rapid advances in digital technologies, social media, and artificial intelligence.

In a statement on the KDF’s official X account on Sunday, June 7, 2026, the KDF highlighted how the interconnected world has transformed information flows, creating both opportunities and significant risks for military operations.

At the same time, KDF noted that the modern security landscape is increasingly being shaped by digital technologies, making the information environment a critical domain in national defence strategies.

“In an increasingly interconnected world, the information environment has emerged as a critical domain of national security. The rapid growth of digital technologies, social media platforms and artificial intelligence has transformed how information is created, shared and consumed, presenting both opportunities and risks for military organizations,”KDF announced.

This initiative aligns with broader Ministry of Defence priorities to foster “digital resilience for the modern soldier.” As digital platforms increasingly influence public perception and operational environments, the KDF is ensuring its forces can effectively operate in contested information spaces while safeguarding national interests.

Why are KDF trained on AI

The training seeks to enhance the capacity of KDF officers to navigate the complex digital space, counter misinformation and disinformation campaigns, and leverage emerging technologies to strengthen operational effectiveness.

The training is a buildup to President William Ruto’s 2025 pledge to combat security threats in the country and regionally by strengthening the defence forces.

Speaking while presiding over the third graduation ceremony at the National Defence University-Kenya in Lanet, Nakuru County, on Friday, November 21, 2025, the Head of State announced plans to empower the military.

At the time, he explained that KDF is evolving by adopting cutting-edge training, advanced research, and modern technology, including artificial intelligence, to ensure they stay ahead of emerging threats.

Ruto then urged officers to use the skills, especially strategic and critical thinking, that they have been trained in to confront and resolve the complex challenges ahead.
