The fifth round of the men’s Kenya Volleyball National League was spiced up with top teams having fun at the Nyayo Stadium Indoor Arena yesterday.
Kenya Defence Forces, General Service Unit and Equity Bank all had smooth sails throughout the event as upcoming teams from Western Kenya had a torrid time on the court.
The highlight of the day was KDF versus Administration Police where the former won 3-0 though with tight scores of (25- 15/25-15/25-20). AP’s duo of Cornelius Rono and Rodgers Kipyego were in full blast mode with attacks on the net that made it problematic for the opposing soldiers’ side.
AP pushed hard in the third set but frequently fell short with the fierce play of Amon Kipchirchir and Stephen Wafula.
Both sides had their downsides especially on receiving but the soldiers’ team made up for their mistakes through sheer grit with excellent blocks mostly from Aggrey Kibungei.
Their service was also solid, often finding the target with pin-point balls. KDF also took advantage of height and power to neutralize their challengers of the day with AP having to crowd the net especially when the soldiers were returning serve.
In another duel, defending champions General Service Unit also had a good outing, hushing Nyanza Prisons in straight sets of 3-0 with scores of 25-14/25-19/25-22. GSU came out guns blazing in the opening set with attacks that went almost unanswered from the opponents.
The opening set was almost a cruise for bigwigs GSU who made minimal mistakes.
Awoke in stride
However, the last two sets were a tad difficult for GSU as the Prisons Nyanza team awoke in stride.
Captain Nicholas Lagat of GSU praised the discipline and character of his players in the match that could have gone either way, especially at the later stage.
“It was a good game because we started well. Our experience and strategy worked perfectly so I am happy with our execution. The season is still young and teams are just getting into the groove but for us, we take each game at a time.
I look forward to our game against Kenya Ports Authority because they are heavy contenders. It will be a busy few days since we have three matches but we are up for it regardless,” stated Lagat who is also a setter for his team.
The other exciting duel on the cards was Equity Bank Volleyball Club which got the better of Rift Valley Prisons which the Wardens won 3-0 (25-14/25-16/25-16). The Bankers were clinical in the opening two sets dominating in all facets of the service, set, block and attack.
They ensured they closed down the danger oaths from the Prison team immaculately.
However, in the third set, things seemed to change on the Prisons’ side as they seemed more comfortable on the ball.
