Transitions are sometimes murky depending on how one handles them. On most occasions, they are life-changing. This week, Class Eight candidates will know what they scored in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination.

Many will be pleased with the results but some will look into the future unaware of what it holds. Before the advent of the Competency Based Curriculum, the results were a make-or-break; they would determine if one succeeded in life or joined the millions of Kenyans who struggle to eke a living; those whose tomorrow is uncertain and many a time lead their lives on the brink. However, that should not be the case. Parents and guardians should help the candidates wade through these waters. Their input is critical.

As the results are announced those who do not perform according to their aspirations or potential should not be downcast. With the right attitude the future holds immeasurable opportunities. The results, of course, are critical in facing the future but they should not be the only determinant. There are examples of those who took up the challenge and unperturbed by societal pressures to carve a bright future; there are those who also fell by the wayside weighed down by the results of the key examinations.

In this year’s exams, more than 1.2 million learners sat the papers.  The government has assured all learners will transition to secondary schools. The government has heavily subsidised secondary education and there is no reason why learners should not proceed to secondary schools. Corporate organisations have also moved in to offer scholarships to bright but needy learners, the county government and the Constituency Development Fund have provisions for funding deserving cases.

We call on more organisations to stand in the gap and help learners not only access education but in a comfortable and secure environment.

The sporadic attacks by bandits and cheating claims tried to put a blot on the exercise but they were not widespread and in many cases, were nipped in the bud. We take this opportunity to encourage all the candidates that irrespective of the results that will be announced ,the future remains entirely in their hands.

They can choose to soar with eagles or decide to brood with turkeys. The choice that one will make this week will define and impact on their lives to eternity. Make the right choice.
