Katiba Day: Maraga pays tribute to Gen Zs, urges Kenyans to protect constitution
By Joel Masibo, August 27, 2025Former Chief Justice David Maraga has paid tribute to Kenyans who fought for the enactment of the 2010 Constitution, hailing it as one of the most transformative in the world.
In his statement of Wednesday, August 27, 2025, marking Katiba Day, Maraga honoured those who lost their lives in the struggle for constitutional change, describing them as “forever our Mashujaa.”
The former CJ also commended citizens who have worked tirelessly since August 2010 to safeguard and push for the full implementation of the Constitution despite persistent political resistance.
Maraga gave special recognition to Gen Z activists, praising them for their courage and renewed energy in defending constitutionalism at a time when, he said, the political elite are bent on undermining it.
Maraga’s tribute
”I pay tribute to those who died in the process of agitating for the Constitution. You are forever our Mashujaa. I celebrate all those Kenyans who have worked day and night since August 2010 to get our constitution fully implemented,” Maraga said.
Further, he added: “I pay special tribute to the Gen Zs, a generation that has strongly decided that – at a time the political elite are doing everything to undermine Katiba – it will invest all its energies in giving new impetus and strength to Katiba,” Maraga said.

The retired CJ further noted that many young Kenyans have paid the ultimate price in recent months, losing their lives in protests against corruption, poor governance, and violations of constitutional principles. He accused the current regime of disregarding life in pursuit of its “corrupt and criminal ways,” vowing that those who died in the struggle for accountability will never be forgotten.
He called on Kenyans to recommit themselves to defending the Constitution, urging vigilance against attempts to weaken it.
“On this day, let us re-dedicate ourselves to tekeleza katiba and protect it jealously from a regime that fought against it and is now determined to violate it in every manner,” Maraga concluded.
The former Chief Justice’s remarks come as Kenya marks 15 years since the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution. David Maraga has also declared his interest in running for the 2027 presidency, promising to respect the constitution if elected president.
