Karua points out illegalities in govt compensation for police brutality victims
Opposition politician Martha Karua has dismissed the government’s policy to compensate the victims of injustices and police brutality, faulting the panel mandate with the task over duplication of roles.
Speaking during a live interview, Karua stated that the plans to compensate the victims were a mere pacifying strategy adopted by the William Ruto administration while casting doubts on the government’s sincerity in the matter.
According to Karua, the genuine compensation is in the purview of the Kenyan National Human Rights Commission and not the panel of victims of compensation that was sworn in on Tuesday, September 4, 2025, to begin its mandate.
Not sensible
“He (Ruto) has not been genuine. He has only been pacifying the Azimio team. Compensating and continuing to kill is not a sensible policy. They ought to start with seeking justice and let it run parallel with the compensation. Let them not start their own creations. They have to follow the instructions; we have the constitutional commission. Why do you want to duplicate mandates?” She posed.
Her sentiments follow after she also tore into Raila Odinga’s bromance with Ruto under the broad-based system.
In her recent onslaught on the government arrangement, the People’s Liberation Party leader challenged his 2022 presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, to take a bold step and formalise his relationship with the Kenya Kwanza government rather than pretending not to be part of it.
“My advice to Raila is: Do not continue the politics of dishonesty. Being in government with one leg and occupying committees that belong to the opposition both in the National Assembly and the Senate, you are obstructing the work of holding government to account. Got to government honourably as the law requires,” she stated.
The lawyer further opines that by holding their recent stance of not being in government, Raila and his ODM party are in stark betrayal of the very constitutional order that he vehemently advocated for.
Constitutional order
“Raila and ODM were at the forefront of the campaign for this constitution, and it is unfortunate that they are now partners in destroying the constitutional order,” she added. “They deny they have a post-election pact but also refer to an agreement of ten points, which they have failed to table to the registrar of political parties,” she asserted.
