Karua calls for investigations over death of 2 Njoro Girls High School students
People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has called on investigative agencies to investigate and take action against those responsible for the death of a student from Njoro Girls’ Senior School.
Taking it to her X handle on Friday, February 6, 2026, Karua has called on the Ministry of Education, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the events that led to the death of the Form Four girl.
“This calls for thorough investigations and action.” Karua’s statement read.

Pathologists report
According to Doctor Wangari Wambugu, a pathologist representing the family, Brenda, who had been ill for several days, died due to cerebral swelling and oxygen deprivation due to a brief acute illness, saying her life might have been saved had treatment been administered expeditiously.
“She had increased intracranial pressure and pulmonary complications, and all those points were consistent with acute illness. Most likely, we are thinking of malaria, but it could be something else, so we are also going to perform other tests to see whether we can identify the underlying cause. It is an acute illness, which implies it is a process that has developed within a few days. If you give illness at the right time, then you will be able to manage the situation,” Wangari said.
Njoro Girls’ High School was closed indefinitely following protests from residents after the Form Four student, Brenda Akinyi, died under unclear circumstances. Residents demanded an explanation of the circumstances under which the student died from the school management.
Brenda Akinyi succumbed to illness at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital after being rushed by the parents. The parents confirmed that she was bedridden for three days in school, accusing the school of negligence.
Another case reported in 2023
Reports have since emerged of another case of a student succumbing to illness, where another student, Whitney Njoki, who was in form 3, then died in the school in March 2023 under unclear circumstances.
On Monday, February 2, 2026, tensions escalated after parents and residents protested outside the school, demanding clarity on the circumstances surrounding the death of the 18-year-old student.
Police had to be deployed in the area to disperse an irate crowd who stormed the school, demanding answers, as a brief standoff ensued.
