Kaluma opposes term extension for NA budget committee members

Homa Bay town constituency Member of Parliament (MP) George Kaluma has opposed an extension of the term for the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee members.

In a statement on his official X account on Friday, February 21, 2025, Kaluma condemned the current committee members for overseeing what he described as an unfair and inequitable allocation of resources, which has contributed to unequal development across the country.

According to the vocal parliamentarian, the inequitable distribution has left many regions underfunded, perpetuating regional disparities that hinder equitable growth and progress in areas that need it most.

“The National Assembly Budget & Appropriations Committee has presided over unfair and inequitable allocation of national resources leading to skewed and unequal development across Kenya,” Kaluma said.

Highlighting the need for new leadership in the committee that would prioritize the welfare of all Kenyans, especially those in underserved areas. The MP also called for reforms in how national resources are allocated, urging a more transparent, accountable, and equitable approach to budget decisions.

“The term of all the current members has ended. We’ll ensure they never sit in the Committee again,” Kaluma said.

The committee leadership is set to be revealed on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, when 18 committees are expected to be reconstituted.

Restructuring NA committees

On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Moses Wetang’ula called for the restructuring of committees whose tenures had expired.

Speaking during the mid-term retreat for members of the National Assembly, Wetang’ula announced that 18 committees needed immediate restructuring when House business resumes.

“I hereby direct the Majority Leader and the Minority Leader to move in earnest and reconstruct the 18 committees whose life has come to an end with the last session.

“Now get ready to bring to House Business the new list of members to various committees, so that we can process and have new leadership or continued leadership with the committees taking into account, as you say, performance, regular attendance of committee meetings, and the industry to which you put in those attendances,”Speaker Wetang’ula stated during the official opening of the 2025 mid-term retreat for members of the national assembly.
