Kalonzo mourns Beryl Odinga as a trailblazing public servant
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka joined mourners at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands, Nairobi, on December 3, 2025, for the requiem mass of the late Beryl Achieng Odinga, sister to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Kalonzo, who studied law with Beryl at the University of Nairobi, shared a tribute reflecting on her life, leadership and impact on public service.
In his message on X, Kalonzo recalled meeting Beryl in their university days and praised the values that defined her.
“This afternoon, I joined friends and the family of the late Beryl Achieng Odinga at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands, Nairobi, for a Requiem Mass in her honour. I first met Beryl at the University of Nairobi, where we studied law together. As the daughter of the late Hon. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga, and the devoted mother of Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurai, Beryl carried herself with a calm confidence, humility, and a quiet sense of purpose. These qualities stayed with her throughout her life.”
Kalonzo described her as a barrier-breaking leader within a distinguished political family. He highlighted her historic appointment in Zimbabwe.
“A true trailblazer, much like many in her distinguished family, including her brother, the former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga, Beryl broke barriers with grace and competence. She became the first Black person to serve as Town Clerk of Mutare, Zimbabwe’s third-largest city, a remarkable achievement that spoke to her skill as an urban planner and her deep commitment to public service.”

Tributes from family and leaders
He noted that Beryl upheld the same dedication after returning to Kenya. “Upon returning home, she continued serving with the same resolve, including as Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, where she earned respect for her firm, principled leadership during a period of great public pressure.”
Kalonzo added that her death was a profound loss to a family that has long shaped Kenya’s political landscape.
“Her passing is a profound loss to a family that has given so much to our nation. To Senator Oburu Oginga, Kisumu County Women Representative Hon. Ruth Odinga, Akinyi Wenwa, Dr. Anne Oburu, Dr. Canon Ida Odinga, Hon. Tabu Osewe and Judy Oburu, my family and the Wiper Patriotic Front hold you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May the Almighty grant you strength and peace, and may Beryl’s memory remain a blessing to all who knew and loved her.”

Beryl Achieng Odinga passed away on November 25, 2025, while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital, coming just weeks after the death of her brother Raila Odinga. ODM announced that she will be buried on December 6, 2025, at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.
