Kakamega school to get teachers back
Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has agreed to deploy 17 teachers to St Gabriel Isongo Secondary School in Kakamega to ensure learning continues.
The move came after TSC held a meeting with politicians from Kakamega county led by Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe (pictured) and resolved that teachers will be posted immediately.
Wangwe said the leaders, including Mumias East MP, Peter Salasya have apologised to the principal and all teachers, TSC and Kenyans for the unfortunate incident in which the teachers were attacked.
“The Catholic Church, who is the school’s sponsor represented by Fr Lugonzo has equally apologized to the principal, the school and Kenyans over the incident,” Wangwe said after the meeting held at TSC headquarters.
He said the right of learners to access compulsory basic education is paramount, adding that teachers working in various schools have equal right to security and safety at the workplace and should operate in an environment free of intimidation, bullying and assault.
“The meeting has resolved that the political leadership of Kakamega will conduct sensitisation programmes to educate the community on proper channels of raising their grievances,” he said.
Wangwe also said the Board of Management (BoM) and sponsor will work closely with county security agencies to ensure the safety and security of teachers is guaranteed.
Similarly, he committed that the BoM will review the investigation report prepared by the Education Cabinet Secretary and TSC and take remedial action as recommended.
On her part, TSC Secretary Nancy Macharia urged communities and stakeholders to work with teachers in their local schools to ensure academic performance is as they would desire, saying it is unfair to target teachers and blame them entirely when the examination results are not up to the parents’ expectations.
“TSC has put in place measures of appraising teachers’ performance and would not hesitate to act on those who fail to meet the standards. Having received apologies of the political leadership of Kakamega, the commission will ensure the 17 teachers report to the school with immediate effect,” she said, in the joint press conference.
