Protests

Kenyans are planning to take to the streets to protest against the government on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

This comes despite warnings from security agencies and the government over extremes during the protests, especially the destruction of property.

The protests are aimed at exerting pressure on the government to reduce its excesses in terms of expenditure, corruption and governance. The protestors are also demanding justice for Kenyans killed by the police previously during anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.

In a statement on June 20, 2024, the National Police Service vowed to protect critical government infrastructure including Parliament buildings.

“The National Police Service is cognizant of the current demonstrations going on across the Country today June 20, 2024, and the ongoing debate at the National Assembly regarding Finance Bill, 2024. With utmost respect to the provisions of Article 37 of the Constitution stipulating the right of citizens to assemble, demonstrate and picket, the Service will neither condone nor approve efforts by demonstrators to either occupy critical government infrastructure including Parliament Buildings,” NPS stated.

Corruption cases

The Milimani Anti-Corruption Court is expected to issue a ruling in a case involving Esther Wanjiru Chege. The suit by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) entails a bid for the recovery of Ksh615 million unexplained wealth from Joseph Chege Gikonyo.

There will be a mention of a case involving Mzalendo Kibunja, former Director of the National Museum of Kenya, and seven others.

They are charged with conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption. Allegations relate to the embezzlement of Ksh441.4 million allegedly fraudulently paid as salaries and gratuity to persons purportedly employed by the National Museum of Kenya.
