Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu part of Gent’s leadership amid exit rumours

Speculations surrounding the future of Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu have been rife, with talks of a potential move away from KAA Gent.

However, it seems the player Okumu remains an integral part of their team leadership.

In a recent statement on their official pages, the club revealed that the towering centre-back has been included among their captains as the vice-captain.

The post featured Sven Kums, Okumu, Julien De Sart, Hugo Cuypers, and Tarik Tissoudali, captioned as “The boss and his vice-captains.”

Despite the rumours, Okumu’s position within the club’s leadership highlights their confidence in his abilities and his importance to the team.

However, the Kenyan international has been strongly linked with a potential move to French club Stade de Reims.

While no official confirmation has been made regarding a transfer, the speculations surrounding Okumu’s future continue to persist.

Joseph Okumu’s career

Looking back at Okumu’s club career, he has represented Chemelil Sugar, Free State Stars, and AFC Ann Arbor.

During his time with AFC Ann Arbor in the 2018 season, he made eight league appearances, showcasing his skills and potential.

On August 16, 2018, Okumu made a move to the USL Championship side Real Monarchs. After a year, on August 28, 2019, he joined Swedish Allsvenskan outfit IF Elfsborg, making a transfer for an undisclosed fee.

His impressive performances caught the attention of Belgian club Gent, and on June 21, 2021, Okumu officially signed with them, further solidifying his professional career.

On the international stage, Okumu’s journey began with the Kenyan Under-21 and Under-23 teams before making his debut for the senior national team in 2016. His presence and contributions have been valuable to the national squad.
