January 1, 2025: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
New Year celebrations to continue
After ushering the year 2025 in style across various regions in the country, Kenyans are expected to flock to major towns and centres for some semblance of celebrations despite the prevailing economic hardships witnessed by most citizens.
Various recreational parks and facilities; both private and public are expected to host Kenyans seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of life before the schools reopen and people return to their businesses and workplaces.
While delivering an end-of-the-year presidential address in Kisii County, President William Ruto observed that the past year started with promise but his administration and Kenyans at large faced significant challenges which greatly affected the well-being of the common citizen.
He, however, exuded confidence in the year 2025, noting that most of his administration’s projects would come full circle during this period.
“The year began with strong faith and optimism despite a climate of hardship, uncertainty, and widespread anxiety,” Ruto stated.
“Global economic shocks drove up the cost of living, while conflicts disrupted supply chains, creating scarcity and rising inflation. At the same time, we were striving to recover from the pandemic’s disruptions.”
“In 2025, the seeds we have patiently and carefully planted will continue to germinate and grow. The progress we have made has set us firmly on a path of rapid and sustainable growth,” Ruto added.
“As a result, we can anticipate stronger economic performance, more jobs for our youth, and higher incomes for farmers and entrepreneurs.”
Abducted individuals
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja is expected to respond after he failed to present seven abducted individuals in court following a court order by High Court Judge Bahati Mwamuye.
In a ruling on December 30, 2024, the judge equally ordered the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to disclose registration details of some of the vehicles captured in the suspected abduction videos.
“The ninth respondent, Douglas Kanja Kirocho, shall in his capacity as the first respondent and also in his capacity as the ninth, personally ensure compliance with orders (1) and (2) above and shall consequently personally produce the second to seventh petitioners before this Court or the Milimani High Court Criminal Duty Court on December 31, 2024, at 11 am and summons to that effect are hereby issued to him,” Justice Mwamuye ruled.
