The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has issued a statement confirming that the vehicle involved in the accident that killed a Kabarak University student belonged to the police.

In a statement shared, IPOA noted that investigations were underway and that the Rapid Response team had identified witnesses who would help with the case.

“Having visited the scene of the incident, the team identified witnesses whose accounts we deem to be critical in ensuring that at the end of investigations, justice is served” the statement by IPOA chairperson Ann Makori reads in parts.

While confirming that the unfortunate incident was a road traffic accident, Makori further alluded that the authority would be attending a postmortem examination today.

She also noted that the move comes as part of the investigatory processes the authority is pursuing in the case.

“Preliminary investigation reveals the incident was a road traffic accident involving a police vehicle bearing registration GKB 396Z. A postmortem examination has been scheduled for today and IPOA has purposed to attend,” the statement added.

Further, Makori pleaded with the family of the deceased to remain calm. She also called on Kenyans who may have relevant information in the case to volunteer by calling their toll-free line.

“The authority pleads with the aggrieved persons to remain calm and further calls on any person who may have information crucial to this investigation, to freely volunteer investigation by calling out toll-free line. 1559. IPOA commits to fair, impartial and independent investigations,” IPOA added.

What happened?

Joshua Limo Arekou, a first-year student who was pursuing a degree in Pharmacy at Kabarak University was on Saturday hit by a police car along the Kabarak-Nakuru-Ravine Road.

Shortly after the incident, the driver is said to have fled the scene, causing mayhem and unrest within the school.

In a statement the university’s organization, Kabarak University Students Organization (KUSO), students condemned the act and called for speedy investigations.

They also vowed to issue a comprehensive report after an autopsy is conducted.

“We strongly condemn this reckless act and are deeply concerned about the apparent negligence that led to such a tragic loss. The issue is being followed up at Menengai Police Station under OB no. 02/19/11/2023. The safety of our students is of utmost importance, and we will not rest until justice is served for our fallen brother and friend,” the organization said.
