Invest in digital literacy, educationist urges universities

Higher learning institutions have been challenged to invest in digital literacy and support digital infrastructure in order to nurture an innovative culture in the Country.

Zetech University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Alice Njuguna reiterated that universities need to be at the forefront of fostering digital literacy through establishment of innovation hubs.

“As institutions of higher learning, we need to be at the forefront of fostering digital literacy through setting up innovation hubs. This way we will be channeling a skilled workforce into the job market,” she said.

Speaking during the award ceremony for the finalists in the Huawei ICT Competition, a competitive ICT Talent event developed by Huawei for students globally, Dr. Njuguna appreciated the efforts by Huawei to mentor young ICT professionals and ensure that they are equipped with the latest skills and competencies in the industry.

“Such initiates give university students an avenue to gain hands-on skills, boost their employability and improve their capacity to be innovative”, said Dr. Njuguna.

In the competitions that attracted over 3,000 applications from Kenyan Universities, out of which 150 students were shortlisted to compete at the National Final, Julius Kirimi of Zetech University emerged second best.

With this year’s theme being “Connection, Glory, Future”, the competition brought together governments, institutions of higher learning, training institutions and industry enterprises to nurture and cultivate, growth and employment of young ICT specialists from universities and colleges to flower the ICT ecosystem.

Kirimi was among six National Finalists who received 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards under the Network and Cloud track representing students from Discover JKUAT, United States International University – Africa, Zetech University, Moi University Eldoret Kenya – Foundation of Knowledge and the University of Nairobi.

The finalists took home laptops, mobile phones, vouchers and certificates of achievement.
