Inside key appointments Murkomen has made to govt agencies

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has made fresh appointments to the leadership of the Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority (PBO-R) and the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA).

According to a Gazette Notice dated Friday, July 24, 2026, Murkomen appointed Adan Haji Ali as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority for a three-year term.

According to the Gazette, the appointment was made under Section 35 (1) (a) of the Public Benefit Organizations Act, 2013, read together with Section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act. The notice states that Haji Ali’s appointment took effect on July 24, 2026, replacing an earlier appointment published in 2023.

“The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, appoint Adan Haji Ali to be the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 24th July, 2026,” the Gazette notice said.

The Gazette Notice further revokes Gazette Notice No. 12400 of 2023.

Sang joins NACADA board

In a separate notice published on the same day, Murkomen appointed Sophie Chepkorir Sang as a member of the Board of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

The Gazette states that Sang will serve for a period of three years, with her appointment also taking effect on July 24, 2026.Her appointment was made under Section 6 (1) (h) of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse Act.

“In Exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (h) of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration appoints Sophie Chepkorir to be a Member of the Board of the National Authority,” Gazette Notice said.

Three-week crackdown

The appointments come as Murkomen steps up the government’s campaign against illicit alcohol and drug abuse.

Speaking during a public baraza in Keringet, Nakuru County, on Saturday, July 25, 2026, Murkomen announced a three-week security operation targeting illicit alcohol and drug trafficking in the area.

The CS said he had agreed with Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to deploy a special team of officers from Nairobi to lead the operation.

“We have agreed with the Inspector General that a special team of police officers will be deployed from Nairobi to stay here for three weeks and fight illicit alcohol. Once they complete the operation, they will be replaced by another fresh team,” Murkomen said.

He directed the team to eliminate illegal alcohol, including chang’aa and sachet liquor, as well as cannabis.

New officers deployed

Murkomen also announced changes within the local police service, saying 20 new officers would be deployed to Keringet.

“All officers who have stayed here for a long time and have been drinking instead of working will be taken for rehabilitation. Twenty new officers will be deployed here, and the Inspector General will implement the changes within the next two weeks,” he said.

The CS also warned brewers and sellers of illicit alcohol that they would face arrest if they continued with the trade.

“I want to tell all those brewing illicit alcohol that today is your last day in that business. Starting tomorrow, any police officer on duty who finds you continuing with the trade should arrest you immediately and take you to court,” Murkomen said.
