Police have discovered a distillery in a village in Ndaragwa, Nyandarua County where counterfeit alcoholic drinks are manufactured before distribution  to counties in the Mt Kenya region.

During the raid in Murereshwa village in Kianjogu location of Nyandarua North sub-county on Tuesday, police found rolls of fake KRA stamps, empty bottles, unmarked bottle tops, seals and a liquid suspected to be ethanol.

Nyandarua Police Commander Omar Arero said the main suspect, a woman, is still at large but security agencies have her details because she had earlier fled Rumuruti town in Laikipia after she was busted running an illicit business.

One and a half rolls of KRA fake stamps and bunches of alcoholic drinks stickers of various brands were also seized.

“I want to thank the people for giving us intelligence that has enabled us to nab people in the process of producing and packaging illicit liquor,” said Arero.

The County police Commander said it is believed the distillery was supplying illicit liquor to major towns in Nyandarua, Laikipia and other counties in the Mt Kenya region.

Mid last year, four people died after drinking suspected illicit alcohol in Nyahururu town while two were hospitalised with sight and stomach complications.
