The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has begun training its top officials on how to manage election disputes and address breaches of the Electoral Code of Conduct.

In a statement on its official X account released on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the commission said the program is being supported by the Electoral Law and Governance Institute for Africa (ELGIA).

“IEBC, with support from ELGIA Africa, is conducting an induction workshop to sensitise the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Commissioners on Election Dispute Resolution,” IEBC stated.

The electoral body added that the training focuses on disputes linked to violations of the code of conduct and issues surrounding candidate registration.

The commission explained that the induction is designed to equip commissioners with the necessary skills and tools to effectively handle electoral disputes, ensuring that such cases are resolved in a timely, transparent, and fair manner. It emphasised that the process is not only meant to strengthen the commissioners’ technical capacity but also to build public confidence in the integrity of electoral processes.

The Electoral Code of Conduct is a critical framework in Kenya’s elections, providing rules that guide the behaviour of political parties, candidates, and their supporters. Breaches of the code have in the past led to disputes that sometimes spill over into the courts or spark political unrest.

Kenya’s electoral body has announced plans to strengthen its capacity for resolving disputes, a move aimed at reducing political tensions and safeguarding the credibility of elections. By enhancing its mechanisms for timely and impartial dispute resolution, the commission seeks to foster public trust and ensure that the electoral process remains fair and transparent. The IEBC said the ongoing induction workshop is part of this wider reform agenda.
