IEBC senior official urges youths to register for 2027 polls

The IEBC director for voter registration and electoral operations Moses Sunkuli has urged the Kenyan youths to prepare to exercise their civic duty by registering as voters.
Speaking during an interview on a local TV station on Friday, January 31, 2025, the official sounded optimistic about resuming the voter registration process as soon as the constituted selection panel presents the names of the new commissioners.
Sunkuli has therefore called on the young Kenyans and all those who are yet to be registered to observe the timelines and be ready for the exercise.
Ready
“I want to ask the youths to get their IDs and be ready to register as voters. The same for everyone not registered. Every system is in place. We have done our papers and program are ready to undertake this process. The law is clear, voter registration is continuous and immediately when this back and forth is done, we will take it from there,” Sunkuli urged.
The official stated despite the numerous hitches arising from delays in the reconstitution of the IEBC body, the presence of a secretariat in place, voter registration system and the staff in posts across all constituencies across the country will see things moving.
“The process of registering voters is the foundation of a credible election. This is where the election process starts. We have our programs and staff ready to undertake this process. We have done what we can do as the secretariat to prepare and as soon as we have the commissioners the process will start,” Sunkuli who is part of the secretariat said.
It remains to be seen how the process will pan out given the limited timeline.
The registration of voters remains one of the crucial functions of the electoral body. The exercise was suspended just before the general election of 2022 with a resumption date set for March 2023.
It however failed to kick off due to the absence of a fully functional and constituted body.
Besides the registration of voters, IEBC cannot conduct by-elections, delimit boundaries, and manage significant procurements.
However the selection on panel has since received massive support following their taking oath of office on Monday, January, 27, 2025.
National Assembly speaker Moses Wetangula pledged to avail the newly appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) selection panel with the necessities for them to execute their mandate.
According to the speaker, secretariat services and budget are among the facilitation the panel will be offered in a bid to expedite their work.
“Further, noting this is a matter of huge national importance, I urge the Selection Panel to expedite and conclude the recruitment process of the IEBC commissioners, at the earliest available opportunity in accordance with the law,” Wetang’ula urged the panel during a past address.
