The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will resume on Monday, September 29, 2025.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring all eligible citizens, especially youth who have recently attained the age of 18, are able to register and take part in future elections.

“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) wishes to inform the public that Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will resume on Monday, 29th September 2025, in line with its constitutional mandate under Article 88(4) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010,” read part of the IEBC statement.

Preparations

In a press release dated August 28, 2025, the Commission noted that it has put in place measures to deliver an inclusive and transparent exercise. Among the preparations are mapping of registration centres for accessibility, engaging stakeholders at the constituency level, consolidating geospatial data, configuring Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits, and rolling out voter education campaigns.

“This exercise is a vital step in ensuring that every eligible Kenyan has the opportunity to participate in shaping the country’s future through democratic elections,” the IEBC stated.

Gazette formalises registration

The resumption of CVR has been formalised through Kenya Gazette Notice No. 12008, published on August 28, 2025. It provides that the continuous registration of citizens as voters and the regular revision of the voters’ roll will begin on September 29. Eligible citizens can visit any of the 290 IEBC Constituency Offices across the country to register, transfer their registration, correct voter details, or inspect their records. However, voter registration will not take place in areas where by-elections are underway.

Under Article 83 of the Constitution, one must be a Kenyan citizen aged 18 or above, in possession of a valid national ID or passport, and not registered elsewhere or convicted of an election offence within the last five years to qualify as a voter. The exercise will be conducted from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.

Compliance and transparency

Gazette Notice No. 12009 further confirms the appointment of registration officers and assistants to oversee the process in line with the Elections Act and related regulations. To safeguard voter information, the IEBC has carried out a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) in compliance with data protection laws.

The Commission has urged all eligible Kenyans to take advantage of the registration drive, reminding citizens of its slogan, “Your Vote, Your Future.”
