Areas severely hit by drought are expected to experience low turnout in the upcoming Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration exercise that is will be rolled out on Monday.

 The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said yesterday that it is keen to intensify voter education in the affected areas, with the view of registering more voters to achieve the targeted six million new voters across the country.

In an interview with People Daily, IEBC Voter Education Manager Amina Sudi said the commission will deploy voter educators across the country including drought ravaged areas to educate voters on the importance of registering as voters..

Very critical

“We shall target voters in relief food distribution centres and educate them why it is important for to participate in the exercise ,” Sudi said.

Kilifi County elections manager Abdulwahid Hussein said the commission has conducted stakeholder engagement in all the seven constituencies, with the hope that the necessary interventions will be taken to ensure smooth running of the exercise.

“ I will be engaging the Catholic Church and other religious organisations to highlight the issues on voter registration, because religious organisations are very critical in terms of voicing, advocacy and general mobilisation,” Hussein told People Daily on phone. 

The exercise will begin from October 4 to November 2 and will be conducted per ward. Each ward will have two voter mobilisers.
